The Ashram de Yoga Sivananda in France

A place of yogic immersion in the heart of the forest

The Ashram de Yoga Sivananda of Orléans, France is a spiritual living space dedicated to the millennial tradition of yoga, nestled in the magnificent Orléans forest just one hour from Paris. Since 2003, this preserved place has welcomed all those seeking to reconnect with the essential in an authentic natural setting.

But what exactly is an ashram?

An ashram is a community living space where yoga is practiced and studied in its most complete dimension. Here, far from urban agitation, you discover what it truly means to live according to yogic principles, 24/7, in harmony with nature and a caring community.

We are a monastic congregation recognized by the French government. Our members are fully committed to leading a yogic life style (blending the practice of postures, meditation, mantra chanting and service).

The ashram flourishes at the heart of a true haven of greenery: vast spaces, ancient forests with century-old trees populated by countless bird species, magnificent sunrises and sunsets. Our garden, with its spring flowers and majestic century-old trees, offers an ideal setting for contemplation and renewal. Our paved paths and lit trails allow for peaceful walks, even in the evening.

The ashram consists of several buildings harmoniously integrated into this natural setting: accommodation spaces offering different types of rooms for all budgets, large practice halls bathed in natural light, warm common areas, and a shop offering yoga books, practice accessories, and healthy products. This infrastructure can comfortably accommodate up to 200 people, thus preserving the intimacy and serenity conducive to spiritual experience.

The International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers is a not-for-profit organization named after Swami Sivananda – one of the most influential spiritual teachers of the 20th century. It was established in 1957 by Swami Vishnudevananda, a close disciple of Swami Sivananda, to practice and teach the ancient yogic knowledge for health, peace, unity in diversity and Self-realization.

First Sivananda Ashram in Europe, our French ashram perpetuates the authentic teaching of Sivananda Yoga, transmitted from master to disciple. Sivananda yoga is integral yoga; it encompasses a complete approach to yoga philosophy through postures (asanas), breathing (pranayama), relaxation, balanced nutrition, and meditation. This holistic approach allows practitioners of all levels to harmoniously develop their body, mind, and soul.

Daily life at the ashram

Each day you live in the ashram follows the natural rhythm of complete yogic living:

  • Two traditional Sivananda yoga classes – adapted to all levels, developing flexibility, strength, and vitality while calming the mind
  • Two daily satsangs – group meditation, devotional chanting, and philosophical teachings that elevate the spirit and renew inspiration
  • Daily lecture – in-depth teaching on yoga philosophy, sacred texts, and practical application of yogic wisdom in modern life
  • Delicious freshly prepared vegetarian meals, lacto-vegetarian and 100% organic, including vegetables from our permaculture garden and a local producer
  • Karma yoga – selfless service that is an integral part of the community experience

A word from Swami Kailasananda

Yoga-Acharya and director of International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres in England and France and a direct disciple of Swami Vishnudevananda

What people need now is practical guidelines on how to make changes in their lives. It is becoming very clear that for this world to overcome the huge challenge it is facing, the changes must come from individuals. This is exactly what yoga can give: guidance on how to live a meaningful and successful life. We need a new definition of success.

Success is not in material possession and power over others. It is in harmonizing ourselves and reaching a clear understanding of who we are. Once we understand that we are the all powerful self, fear disappears, and if there is no fear, how can one harm anyone? This will solve religious conflicts, environment conflicts, addiction and depression problems. People will regain self esteem and hope for the future. They will sense that their true roots are not in a country or a religion, but that the grounding and stability they are seeking comes from a clear sense of identity.

This new sense of goal will bring focus, positivity and fresh energy. This will in turn affect their health positively.

To summarize, yoga can:

  • improve our health
  • relax our minds
  • focus our attention
  • make us positive
  • give us a clear sense of goal
  • make us realize we are not only physical beings, we are multidimensional beings
  • make us transcend the sense of separateness and realize our unity with everything that is
  • find a solution to the meaninglessness conflicts and general degeneration of the state of humanity

Yoga is about more than the body, it is a way of life to understand why we are here and share this knowledge with others. This will bring ultimate satisfaction.
Practice yoga, tap the source.

May the whole world attain peace and harmony.

We look forward to sharing these teachings with you.
